Learning Science with Sal

May 4, 2022 by Melanie

Science activities and experiments are a fun way to work with how children learn. The experts point out that science is important in the lives of young people for a number of reasons:

  • Science involves a lot of communication with other people.
  • Science develops patience and perseverance in kids.
  • It can help kids form a healthy dose of skepticism.
  • Science teaches kids about the world around them.
  • Science can spark in kids’ minds that they, too, can help solve the world’s big problems.

To learn more about the benefits of science for children, see our “learning science through play” article – but don’t take our word for it – come see for yourself by joining us for some interactive virtual “Science with Sal” sessions!

Join Salvina for interactive science programming from the comfort of your own home and take advantage of the live or pre-recorded sessions as is most convenient for your schedule. This program offers opportunities for you to embark on a hands-on learning experience no matter where you are, using easy-to-find at home materials.

All are welcome — whether your desire is to participate hands-on, or your preference is  to observe and enjoy!

May Schedule: Science with Sal

The first virtual live session will be May 5, 2022 at 2:00p.m. and then alternate the following week into a pre-recorded science.

The schedule is as follows:

  • May 5th 2:00am – 2:30pm (Live Session)
  • May 12th 2:00am – 2:30pm (Pre-Recorded Session)

Learning with Science: Dancing Mothballs

June 22, 2018 by Melanie

Cognitive learning is all about watching, listening touching and experiencing. Naturally, children are more likely to absorb things they see and hear around them. Learning techniques such as science activities and experiments are as popular as they are with children, because they really do work with how children learn.

To learn more about the benefits of science for children, see our “learning science through play” article from February of this year. But don’t take our word for it – come see for yourself by joining us for our next science activity on June 27th from 1:30-2pm. CT staff will be guiding children through a fun, hands-on “dancing mothball” activity. It will surely ignite your child’s curiosity and fascination with the world around us!

See you there!

Science Activities for May!

May 2, 2018 by Melanie

Creating together is committed to making learning fun – and each month, we feature a couple of science activities to encourage your children to have fun learning about science and nature.

When children are engaged in learning about science and nature, they are also learning strategies for active exploration, thinking and reasoning and develop working theories for making sense of the natural, social, physical and material worlds around them.” (Nurtured at Home, theimaginationtree.com)

What’s in store for May?

On May 9th, Tanya will be taking the kids through a “sink and float eggs”. What happens when you put an egg in a glass of regular water? Are there other liquids you can add to make the egg sink or float? What else can you dissolve in the water to make the egg float?

And on May 23rd, we’ll be learning about static electricity with plastic spoons!

Have we peaked your curiosity? Join us!

Looking for more?  Encourage your children to have fun learning about science and nature using some of these activities from “under5s” which are easy to do at home:

  • preparing and cooking food
  • caring for plants
  • playing with water and ice
  • recycling

Learning Science Through Play

February 7, 2018 by Melanie

Science is “a way of exploring and investigating the world around us… not only a way of knowing; it is…a way of doing” (Wenham, 1995, p. 2). And according to the experts, it is important in the lives of young people for a number of reasons:

  • Science involves a lot of communication with other people.
  • Science develops patience and perseverance in kids.
  • It can help kids form a healthy dose of scepticism.
  • Science teaches kids about the world around them.
  • Science can spark in kids’ minds that they, too, can help solve the world’s big problems.

So how do we foster science in our young?

Science Activity at Creating Together: Food colour and coffee filters – using droppers.

According to Wenham, Science involves the discovery of something that is true, why something occurs, and how something is investigated (1995). Educators, parents, and caregivers can facilitate children’s involvement  in science by providing materials, raising questions and problems as children play, and encouraging them to observe, predict, describe, and theorize about what they’re doing – ultimately helping them to grow in their thinking.

The National Science Education Standards (National Research Council, 1996) call for science to be taught through the inquiry method. Inquiry follows the tradition of hands-on exploration of children’s own questions that eventually lead to discovery of scientific concepts.

“Students should be actively involved in exploring phenomena that interest them. These investigations should be fun and open the door to…more things to explore” (American Association for the Advancement of Science [AAAS], 1993, p. 10).

The team at Creating Together is excited to be offering Science Activities this year, so parents and caregivers can come together with their children and encourage a hands-on exploration of the world around us!

Join us! We certainly look forward to seeing you!
