Halloween Costume Party!

November 2, 2017 by Creating Together

All day on October 31st, children poured into Creating Together with their adorable costumes, enjoying the Halloween decorations and activities that the staff put together for them.

Take a look at these snapshots of some of the fun had!

Where did the costume dressing tradition? Like the tradition of carving pumpkins, this is a Celtic tradition, where people would dress in disguise to fool and ward off the spirits, hoping to protect their land through the upcoming winter. The word Hallowe’en is a modernization of “Hallow Eve”, a name still used by some older people in Ireland to mean All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day on November 1. Traditionally, this time of year marked the farmer’s festival Samhain, which literally means “summer’s end” – it is also the word for November in Irish and Scots Gaelic.

Here’s another interesting Canadian fact: The earliest known reference to what is now “trick or treating” in Canada, occurs in 1911, when a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario, reported that it was normal for the smaller children to go street “guising” on Halloween between 6:00 and 7:00 P.M., visiting shops and neighbors to be rewarded with nuts and candies for their rhymes and songs. The earliest known use in print of the term “trick or treat” appears in 1927, from Blackie, Alberta.

Pumpkin Carving: An Old Celtic Tradition

October 28, 2017 by Creating Together

Children came together with their caregivers and parents to celebrate the old Celtic autumn tradition of carving pumpkins!

Halloween dates back to the Celtic farming festival “Samhain”. The holiday marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

As the crops died, farmers believed there was a day when spirits could rise from their graves. During Samhain, Celtic people would dress in disguise to fool and ward off the spirits, hoping to protect their land through the upcoming winter.

As part of their autumnal celebration, they wanted to light the way to their homes for the good spirits, and ward off evil spirits, so they carved faces into vegetables such as turnips and squash (they didn’t have pumpkins). When the Irish came to North America, they quickly learned that pumpkins were larger for carving,  and so the tradition began!

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the harvest and beginning of winter!

Autumn Fun with Creating Together

October 12, 2017 by Creating Together

Farms are incredible places for little ones, bringing unforgettable memories and a host of educational benefits like sensory development, exploration and discovery, language development, and motor skills.  All this, while also promoting healthy living and connection with nature!

Each Autumn, Creating Together families and caregivers take the kids out to Chudleigh’s Apple Farm in Milton to enjoy the annual tradition of apple picking. This year was especially significant, as it marked Chudleigh’s 50th year helping families build memories! Creating Together families enjoyed the Orchard and Play Area all day long, bringing home bags of fresh apple goodness at the end of the day.

Open until October 31st,  if you missed the field trip with Creating Together last month, you still have a week to visit the farm! In fact, if you can make it up you may also want to celebrate their 50th year by taking part in their Scavenger Hunt, a contest for their special 50th Anniversary Wooden Gift Box. To enter, visit the farm, snap pictures of yourself at 3 of the listed farm experiences and post them on Facebook or Instagram (3 separate posts) with #Chudleighs and @ChudleighsFarm.

Don’t forget to join us also at Creating Together on October 26th at 3:15pm for Pumpkin Carving, and on October 31st for our Halloween Costume Party!!!

Celebrating Community at the Annual Summer Picnic 2017

September 1, 2017 by Creating Together

It’s so important to come together and celebrate as a community – When we come together in this way as a community, we create a stronger foundation for our children while also creating a stronger community as a whole.

Each year, before Creating Together closes for the summer, the staff and board host a summer picnic at our local Albert Crosland Park. Families and friends all come together to celebrate the season with food, games, and great company.

Summer Picnic 2017

As we get ready to close the center for the summer (don’t worry, we’ll be opening again on September 5th), we remember all the fun had this year, and celebrate the relationships, memories and bonds that were created. Together, we had some really wonderful times, and it’s those memories that will create a better Parkdale, and a stronger connection between our children and community. These are the roots that last a lifetime.

We look forward to seeing all of you again in September, and hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
