Black Resistance on the Bookshelf

February 8, 2023 by Creating Together

Children’s Books for Black History Month

Reading is not only a wonderful way to support your child’s literacy, but also to support their education and learning around Black History. This year’s Black History Month theme is “Black Resistance”, and we invite you to engage with a few selections from curated book lists. Check out the books below, and feel free to visit the sources linked for further book recommendations.

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me

by Angelou, Maya

Maya Angelou’s brave, defiant poem celebrates the courage within each of us, young and old. From the scary thought of panthers in the park to the unsettling scene of a new classroom, fearsome images are summoned and dispelled by the power of faith in ourselves. Angelou’s strong words are matched by the daring vision of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose childlike style reveals the powerful emotions and fanciful imaginings of childhood. Together, Angelou’s words and Basquiat’s paintings create a place where every child, indeed every person, may experience his or her own.

Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History

by Harrison, Vashti

Featuring forty trailblazing black women in American history, Little Leaders educates and inspires as it relates true stories of breaking boundaries and achieving beyond expectations. Illuminating text paired with irresistible illustrations bring to life both iconic and lesser-known female figures of Black history such as abolitionist Sojourner Truth, pilot Bessie Coleman, chemist Alice Ball, politician Shirley Chisholm, mathematician Katherine Johnson, poet Maya Angelou, and filmmaker Julie Dash.

Hey Black Child

by Perkins, Useni Eugene

Collier’s characteristic watercolor-and-collage masterpieces bring joy and gravity to Perkins’s inspirational poem. With a compelling rhythm that begs for recitation, the verse (often misattributed to Countee Cullen) celebrates the power and potential of black children. The illustrations pair young black faces with visions of their successful futures as astronauts, artists, politicians, and more and feature some of the artist’s favorite motifs, including soaring balloons and rays of light. The visuals also contribute historical heft to the lyrical affirmation, layering images from African civilizations, the civil rights movement, and Black Lives Matter into the spreads, connecting the book’s triumphs to African Americans’ roots and ongoing struggles against racism and oppression.

Mae Among the Stars
by Ahmed, Roda

When Little Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering. She wanted to be an astronaut. Her mom told her, “If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.” Little Mae’s curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents’ encouraging words, paved the way for her incredible success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space.

I Am Enough
By Grace Byers

Empire actor and activist Grace Byers along with artist Keturah A. Bobo have written a lyrical ode to loving who you are, respecting others, and being kind to one another.

Skin Like Mine
By LaTashia Perry

An entertaining yet creative way to address and celebrate diversity among young children.

I Love My Hair
By Natasha Tarpley

A girl named Keyana discovers the beauty and magic of her special hair, encouraging black children to be proud of their heritage and enhancing self-confidence.

Sulwe
By Lupita Nyong’o

A whimsical and heartwarming story to inspire children to see their own unique beauty.

Malaika’s Winter Carnival

by Nadia L. Hohn, illustrated by Irene Luxbacher

Malaika is happy to have her Mummy again, and Mr. Frederic and her new sister Adele seem nice. But being part of a new family means moving to a new country — Canada — where everything is strange. It’s cold in her new city, she misses Grandma, no one understands when she talks and Carnival is nothing like Carnival in the Caribbean. This title is also available in French as Le carnaval de Malaika.

Student-Life at Creating Together

January 12, 2023 by Creating Together

We at Creating Together are thrilled to offer students an engaging hands-on learning experience. We welcome a variety of different areas of studies, and are most frequently joined by students studying early childhood education, and nursing. In turn, students are a deeply valued addition to our Creating Together team and community!

Read on below to hear from students Samantha (Early Childhood Studies) and Toni (Nursing), who joined us in the Fall of 2022.

“I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me into Creating Together. I did not know much about EarlyON centres before starting my placement here. Together, you and your children taught me what EarlyON centres, specifically Creating Together, are about. They are places that demonstrate the importance of community, it has been amazing to see so many families come together and bond over their children. It has been so interesting to watch your children grow and develop, as well as being able to witness your engagement with your children. I would like to thank everyone at Creating Together for allowing me to learn alongside you all.”

-Samantha

“Thank you to all the amazing families I got to work with during my clinical placement
from September to November. I have learned so much about the role of a
community health nurse and feel grateful to have worked with everyone. Creating
Together has taught me about the importance of community in early childhood
development and I have grown so much as a person after experiencing a feeling
of belonging here. I want to especially thank Leah and Zalikha for guiding me
throughout the semester. I hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the year with
their families.”

-Toni

Thank you Samantha and Toni for your hard work, and for sharing your warm words! We wish you all the best with the rest of the school year.

We’re Counting on Your Support this Season

November 24, 2022 by Creating Together

“I bring my son and baby here every week to learn, play, and teach my children. If it wasn’t for this place I don’t know where I would take my children or get the help I need.”

– Parent

We have received some lovely messages from current and past families since we launched our fundraising campaign earlier this month. They have been wonderful reminders of our many community connections, as Creating Together has been supporting families in Parkdale since 1976. With your help, we can continue to offer high quality, accessible support and services to our community into the future!

Please consider making a donation in support of our program through our Canada Helps page.

Curious about how many families drop in each month? Here’s a look at Creating Together by the numbers:

Our community continues to grow – we love seeing new and familiar faces each week!

With over 1,000 visits monthly, we will direct some funds raised towards hiring additional program staff to keep up with our growing community. We hope we can count on your support in the coming weeks!

This Holiday Season, We Need Your Support

November 24, 2022 by Creating Together

Dear Creating Together Friends and Family,

We are eager to announce that we will be participating in Giving Tuesday on November 29! Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement which unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. We hope you will join us in supporting our meaningful work on this exciting occasion.

As you know, in September 2022 Creating Together had to relocate from our longtime home at Queen and Sorauren, and we are thrilled to have found a new space at Queen and Brock. With this move comes new challenges: increased rent and a greater demand for our services, and therefore a need for renovations to our space and additional staff support.

Our sunny program space at 1342 Queen Street West.

This holiday season, your support will go towards:
– Renovations to our community kitchen, allowing a fully functioning nutrition program including healthy snacks and hands-on baking and cooking programs for families
– Accessibility upgrades, including to the office, washroom and front door
– Hiring additional program staff, ensuring the ideal level of support and service to match the increased demand that our centre is experiencing.

There are several ways to give, and we are happy to provide charitable tax receipts:

~ Single gifts or Monthly donations through Canada Helps.

~ Host a fundraiser as part of your birthday celebrations, school bake sale, or workplace gathering

~ Designate your United Way contributions to Creating Together using our charitable number

~ Corporate partnerships. For more information, contact our Resource Development Manager today at patty-creatingfamiliestogether@rogers.com

We have been serving the families of Parkdale since 1976, and with your help, we can continue to offer accessible support and services to our community into the future.

From everyone at Creating Together, THANK YOU in advance for your support.

Sorting shapes together.
