Family Baking: Banana and Raisin Muffins

February 25, 2020 by Melanie

On the first Tuesday of every month, Creating Together families come together to create a healthy muffin to share for snack. This month, we tried our hand at some healthy Banana and Raisin Muffins!

Hope you can make it at our next Family Baking activity in March!

Benefits of Bananas and Raisins

One of the key ingredients in this recipe is bananas. Among the worlds most popular fruits, bananas contain fair amounts of fibre, a number of antioxidants, and several nutrients – B6, Potassium, and Vitamin C to name a few.

The other key ingredient in this recipe is raisins – which are packed with energy and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Raisins are naturally sweet and high in sugar and calories, but taken in moderation, they can aid digestion, boost iron levels, and keep your bones strong.

So in addition to being super healthy, making these mini muffins is easy and fun to do with your children – so take a look at the recipe card below, and enjoy!

Did you know…

  • You can freeze any muffin! Bake, completely cool and freeze in any air tight container for up to 3 months. Thaw on a counter for 3-4 hours or overnight.
  • Have an egg allergy? Want to try a vegan option? Substitute eggs with mashed banana, pumpkin, or applesauce (one-fourth cup of the purée per egg). Another option is ground flax or chia seeds (whisk together 1 tablespoon of ground chia or flaxseeds with 3 tablespoons of water until fully absorbed and thickened).

Family Time Baking!

February 9, 2019 by Melanie

Baking together as a family is filled with benefits for the whole family. The wisdom that gets shared is absolutely worth the effort. Here are some benefits, to name a few:

1. Math Skills: If you’re working with older kids, doubling a recipe requires addition/multiplication skills, while halving requires division. What’s more, recipe fractions like 1/2 cup and 3/4 teaspoon bring math into the kitchen. For younger ones, its a great first exposure to measures – how many of one cup can go into another?

2. Real Life Science: Cooking is such a science experiment, and gives an opportunity for kids to get hands-on experience with basic science. With toddlers, make sure you choose recipes that don’t take too much time, and allow your toddler to help with small jobs such as tipping in ingredients, stirring the mixture, and passing utensils.

3. Self-Esteem: Cooking gives kids instant feedback, which helps them learn and grow in understanding themselves. Learning a new skill, such as baking or cooking, is known to help children develop a healthy self-esteem, and a also a stronger, more positive relationship with food!

4. Communication: A relaxed atmosphere in the kitchen gives parents and kids an opportunity to talk about anything! It also helps younger children practice their vocabulary with words used in cooking, and follow instructions (e.g., mix, stir, combine).

5. Life Skills: Cooking is a life skill, and starting at a young age helps children when they are older, to transition to adult cooking responsibilities.

6. Fun! Having fun together in the kitchen builds great memories, good vibes, and good relationship with food.

At Creating Together, we have a monthly family baking activity for families, where everybody comes together to learn a healthy muffin recipe and practice baking it with their little ones. This month, we created “Maple Apple Oatmeal Muffins”. If you weren’t able to make it, try out the recipe below at home! And be sure to keep your eye out on our calendar for the next one!

Food, Family, and Community

March 2, 2017 by Melanie

Communities around the world are brought together by food, and Creating Together is no exception. Last month, food really brought us all together, with our healthy choice muffin creations during our family baking time, our heart cookie morsels for Valentines, and Family Day potluck feast!

Involving our children in food creation is actually an excellent way to develop language, math, and healthy life skills.

Did you know that picky eaters are more likely to eat something that they’ve helped to make?

Give it a try at home! Print off the recipe card below, and enjoy these tips for cooking with kids, to help make cooking a great experience for everybody. If you missed our last family baking event, no worries – we’ll see you on March 7th at 9:30 for our next healthful muffin making extravaganza!
