Pumpkin Carving: An Old Celtic Tradition

October 28, 2017 by Creating Together

Children came together with their caregivers and parents to celebrate the old Celtic autumn tradition of carving pumpkins!

Halloween dates back to the Celtic farming festival “Samhain”. The holiday marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

As the crops died, farmers believed there was a day when spirits could rise from their graves. During Samhain, Celtic people would dress in disguise to fool and ward off the spirits, hoping to protect their land through the upcoming winter.

As part of their autumnal celebration, they wanted to light the way to their homes for the good spirits, and ward off evil spirits, so they carved faces into vegetables such as turnips and squash (they didn’t have pumpkins). When the Irish came to North America, they quickly learned that pumpkins were larger for carving,  and so the tradition began!

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the harvest and beginning of winter!

Autumn Fun with Creating Together

October 12, 2017 by Creating Together

Farms are incredible places for little ones, bringing unforgettable memories and a host of educational benefits like sensory development, exploration and discovery, language development, and motor skills.  All this, while also promoting healthy living and connection with nature!

Each Autumn, Creating Together families and caregivers take the kids out to Chudleigh’s Apple Farm in Milton to enjoy the annual tradition of apple picking. This year was especially significant, as it marked Chudleigh’s 50th year helping families build memories! Creating Together families enjoyed the Orchard and Play Area all day long, bringing home bags of fresh apple goodness at the end of the day.

Open until October 31st,  if you missed the field trip with Creating Together last month, you still have a week to visit the farm! In fact, if you can make it up you may also want to celebrate their 50th year by taking part in their Scavenger Hunt, a contest for their special 50th Anniversary Wooden Gift Box. To enter, visit the farm, snap pictures of yourself at 3 of the listed farm experiences and post them on Facebook or Instagram (3 separate posts) with #Chudleighs and @ChudleighsFarm.

Don’t forget to join us also at Creating Together on October 26th at 3:15pm for Pumpkin Carving, and on October 31st for our Halloween Costume Party!!!

Warm Welcome to Helen!

October 3, 2017 by Creating Together

Creating Together warmly welcomes Helen Vogt, a second year Ryerson student in the Early Childhood Studies program, completing her eleven-week placement at Creating Together Family Resource Centre.

Helen comes to us with a significant amount of experience working with children of all different ages, from toddlers up to age 11. In 2015 she completed her cooperative education placement in a kindergarten classroom for five months, and even after she completed her placement she continued volunteering with the classroom until the end of the year!

Helen is creative, organized, and artistic, with a love for planning activities and crafts for children. Make sure your children take advantage of her creativity at the crafts and activities table in Creating Together!

Upon completion of her program, Helen plans to attend teachers college so she can work as a kindergarten teacher. Ultimately though,  she thinks she’ll go into childcare and eventually have her own home childcare centre.

Thank you for joining us Helen, and sharing your passions and experience with the children of Creating Together!

Warm Welcome to Shkurta Aliu!

September 25, 2017 by Creating Together

Throughout the year, Creating Together has students from learning programs across the city join us for their field placements. One such program is Ryerson’s Early Childhood Studies Program, which helps it’s students gain the knowledge and skills needed to advance the health and well-being of children in the early years, and for life.

Through this program, students might pursue a career in practice, policy or research, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families from diverse backgrounds. One thing Ryerson is known for, is it’s integration of hands-on field practice. In fact, one-third of their program involves linking theory with field practice through placements in various professional settings like Creating Together.

So join us in welcoming Shkurta Aliu, a 2nd year Ryerson Student taking the Early Childhood Studies program. Shkurta was born in Kosovo, and has lived in Canada since she was three years old. She is pursuing her dreams of becoming an elementary school teacher, and is really excited to participate and learn with the children and parents / caregivers at Creating Together.

Shkurta, Creating Together gives you a warm welcome! We are equally excited to have you join us over the next few months, and grateful for your help in making the center the best that it can be!
