Engaging Children in Play and Physical Activity

April 27, 2017 by Creating Together

Who doesn’t enjoy watching children play? What is interesting though, is aside from it being adorable, play has a number of really important benefits:

  1. Play builds confidence and imagination.
  2. Play develops key motor and athletic skills.
  3. Play with others teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.
  4. Play can build strong bonds between parents and children.
  5. Play makes kids happy.

Many of us have forgotten how to play, so here are some quick tips for engaging your child in play from the Women and Children’s Health Network. At Creating Together, we have our students come in from various schools across the city to support programming and engage the kids. In fact, for those of you who missed her departure, our placement student Mary has just finished her 3-month placement with us.

In addition to play, physical activity is another important aspect of healthy child development, with effects on sleep, heart health, muscle and bone strength, happiness, and more (PartcipACTION 2016). For some help in this department, Creating Together offers an exercise and movement program in alignment with the City of Toronto’s Rainbow Fun Guide – a physical activity and healthy eating program for children 3-6 years old.  Through this program, children build on skills like listening, singing, movement and participation, while developing their fine and gross motor skills.  If you’d like to get more involved, keep your eye out in our calendar for the busy body exercise cards, parachute play, and scarf dancing.

On days when the weather keeps you inside at home, there are a number of great indoor games to choose from. However, with the weather getting nicer, there are a number of benefits around connecting children with nature. For instance:

  1. Children with symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are better able to concentrate after contact with nature (Taylor et al. 2001).
  2. Children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including coordination, balance and agility, and they are sick less often (Grahn, et al. 1997, Fjortoft & Sageie 2001).
  3. Nature buffers the impact of life’s stresses on children and helps them deal with adversity. The greater the amount of nature exposure, the greater the benefits (Wells & Evans 2003).
  4. Nature helps children develop powers of observation and creativity and instills a sense of peace and being at one with the world (Crain 2001).
  5. Children who play in nature have more positive feelings about each other (Moore 1996).

Come in and ask our staff about upcoming day trips organized by Creating Together, giving everybody the opportunity to connect with eachother, expand horizons, and create great memories. Some examples of annual outings include:

  • Ontario Science Centre
  • Bronte Creek Conservation Park (Oakville)
  • Strawberry picking at Downey’s Farm (Caledon)
  • Apple picking at Chudleigh’s Farm (Milton)
  • Metro Toronto Zoo

See you there!

Helping Children Thrive by Celebrating Traditions

April 21, 2017 by Creating Together

Did you know that of the 54,000 people living in Parkdale, 40% have a Mother Tongue other than English or French (Ward 14 Census, 2011)? At Creating Together, we celebrate the diversity of Parkdale as a place where people bring together their cultures and values, creating a safe and fun environment for children and families to thrive.

In fact, research since the 1950s shows us that no matter which language you speak or where you are from in the world, traditions and rituals in family life are linked to increased happiness, emotional well-being, and a greater sense of identity in children. Whether it’s Sunday dinners, birthdays, or family game night, having routines that you do as a “family” is important on many levels. If you’re looking to create a family routine, take a look at our calendar and consider joining us for a weekly activity like Literacy Mondays, or Family Playtime every day at 9:30!

Last week, we celebrated Easter with the age-old traditions of egg decorating, egg hunting, and of course the sharing of food. In many cultures around the world, the egg is a symbol of new life, fertility and rebirth. Traditionally used as gifts during the holidays of Easter or springtime, egg decorating extends across many cultures, and the children of Creating Together had a wonderful time decorating with their parents and caregivers.

Mark Your Calenders!

Coming up, we help families and caregivers celebrate Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14th) and Father’s Day (Sunday, June 4th), so don’t forget to join us the week of May 8th-12th and May 29th-June 2nd to create some loving gifts for mom & dad!

Also coming up on May 6th, is our Annual General Meeting. This is a great opportunity to meet the Board, celebrate all that we have accomplished to date, and make suggestions for moving forward. Please confirm by April 28th if you’ll be attending (details in the invitation to the right).

We hope to see you there!

Farewell, and Thank You Emily!

April 13, 2017 by Creating Together

The parents, caregivers, staff, and especially the children of Creating Together would like to give a shout out to Emily, and huge gratitude for what she has given to our community during her internship with us all over the last couple of months. As you can see, Emily engaged with the children in a beautiful way, and they really took to her. She also made sure to connect with parents, connecting them with resources and support while she was here supporting our programs. Emily’s placement with us ended this month, and while we are sad to see her go, it has been wonderful to have her share her knowledge, compassion, and love of children with the Creating Together community.

We would also like to share with you some of Emily’s last words:

I have a learned a lot this semester at Creating Together. I learned the importance of being at the child’s level, because it is important for me to have eye contact with them and be at their level when playing. I also learned the importance of family-centred care. Since Creating Together is not a day care, parents come and interact with their children, have a chance to interact with other adults, and also allow their children to interact with other children. It is important for children to have different environments of play and also to be able to make connections with their peers and learn certain behaviours. I will go on to my next placement or future job with these concepts in mind.

Thank you for having me!

We are sad to see you go, Emily, but certainly wish you all the best as you complete your program at Ryerson.

Farewell, and thank you Emily, for all you have given!

Community Survey: Ensure Your Voice is Heard

April 4, 2017 by Creating Together

Communities across Toronto are being given the opportunity to help shape the delivery of programs for families and children. Your feedback is critical to help the City of Toronto understand how to allocate funds and ensure improved services for children, families, and caregivers.
As you know, there are a variety of programs in Toronto where parents and caregivers can go with their young children to play, learn, receive parenting support, and information on child development. In January 2018, the City of Toronto will become responsible for the programs that are currently funded by the Ministry of Education.
Some examples include:
  • Better Beginnings Better Futures,
  • Family Resource Centres,
  • Ontario Early Years Centres and
  • Parenting and Family Literacy Centres (located in Schools).
Together with our community partners, Toronto Children’s Services wants to understand why you attend these programs, or why you don’t. Please take a moment to share your thoughts and experiences through this short survey. This survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete.
  • OEYCFC Planning – Needs Assessment Parent Survey

If you need support with reading and completing the survey, please drop by Creating Together and talk to Zalikha, or email her at: creatingtogether@rogers.com

Greetings From Mary

March 28, 2017 by Creating Together

Hi!

My name is Mary Stefi Tantoco and I am a second year ECE student from Humber College. I was born in the tropical country of the Philippines on the year of 1996 and moved in Canada last 2008.

There are many reasons (personal particularly) why I entered the ECE field and to make it simpler I love and enjoy working with kids! My desire to make learning a more positive experience for them has only increased with time and because of that I realized that children teach us more meaningful things as much as we teach them. They make us appreciate the little things in life and I genuinely love to be working with children around me.

Throughout this 4th semester, I will be assisting the Creating Together Community Centre from January 25th– April13th of 2017.

Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance of anything and I will be glad to help. You can contact me at stefitantoco@gmail.com.

I am looking forward to learn and work with all of you!
